Creating a Diabetic Diet
Maria M Professional Writer
Diabetes affects many people. It is a medical condition of the metabolic process. Food is broken down into glucose which is a form of sugar. Our bodies use this sugar to fuel our bodies. During processing, the glucose makes its way into our bloodstream with the help of insulin. Insulin is what helps our cells be able to absorb and accept the glucose.
Insulin is a product produced by the pancreas. When you eat, your pancreas releases insulin to help move the glucose on into our cells as well as it helps keep the level of glucose in our blood, down.
When you have diabetes, your body may be functioning in one of three ways:
Your pancreas may not produce enough insulin to aid in the breakdown of glucose.
Your pancreas doesn't function well. It is unable to produce any insulin at all.
Your cells don't respond the way they should to the insulin that your pancreas does produce.
If you have diabetes, your doctor may put you on a specific diet; a diabetic diet. This is because he will want you to control certain foods that you eat.
In a diabetic diet, you should reduce or eliminate these foods:
High fat meats such as, organ meats
Fried foods
Foods high in saturated fats
Sweets
High cholesterol foods
Fast food
Foods you should include in your diabetic diet are:
Protein - chicken, lean beef, or fish
Whole grain breads and pastas
Dairy - cheese, sour cream, and milk
Fresh vegetables
Fresh fruits
You may have some unsaturated fats such as that is found in salad dressings, but it is important to limit these in your diet.
Diabetes is controllable today with the aid of medical treatment and how we take care of our bodies. You play a vital role in helping to manage your diabetes, and diet is one of the most important. The more you know about diabetes and proper diet, the easier it will be to control.
